High-Risk Pregnancy

Approximately a third of all women experience a pregnancy-related complication before, during or after delivery. Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians, also called perinatologists, are obstetricians who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of expectant mothers and their unborn babies.

If your obstetrician or infertility specialist believes you may have the potential for a pregnancy-related health concern before you have conceived, or after a problem develops during the pregnancy, you will be referred to a perinatologist who works hand-in-hand with your obstetrician to develop a plan of care. Though you may see the perinatologist several times throughout your pregnancy, your own obstetrician will continue to manage the pregnancy and will deliver the baby.
 
Morristown Memorial Hospital is a Level III Regional Perinatal Center and Overlook Hospital is a Level III Intensive Perinatal Center.  All beds are equipped with the most sophisticated technology available, including individual fetal monitors with a central monitoring station. Both hospitals also have Neonatal Intensive Care Units to provide advanced care to our smallest patients.

Board-Certified Neonatologists

A neonatologist -- a pediatrician who specializes in care for newborns with special medical needs -- will be briefed before your delivery by the perinatologist to make sure all of the services you and your baby may require are in place should you need them. If complications should occur during labor or delivery, each room in our Maternity Center is equipped for emergency situations and our highly qualified staff is trained to respond.
